කොරෝනා වෛරසය ජයගැනීමට මහජනතාව වන අප විසින් කල යුතු කාර්යභාරය

පසුගිය සති කිහිපයේ ශ්‍රී ලoකාවේ සෞඛ්‍ය සහ ආරක්ශක අoශ වල සියලුම දෙනා කොරෝනා වෛරසය මර්ධනයට බොහෝ ප්‍රශoසනීය කාර්‍යභාරයක් ඉටු කල බව අප අවිවාදයෙන් පිළිගත යුතුය. වෙන මුකුත් සාක්ශි අවශ්‍ය නෑ බලන්න ඉහත ඡායාරෑපයේ ආරක්ශක අoශ වල තරැණයන් දෙස. මම යෝජනා කරනවා පිටරට ඉඳල ඇවිත් නිරෝධායන මධ්‍යස්ථානවල ඉඳල යද්දි ආරක්ශක අoශයට මේ පහසුකම් ඉදිරියටත් පවත්වා ගැනීමට රැපියල් දහදාහක්වත් දීල යන්න. ඕක කොච්චර කාලයක් නොමිලේ කරන්නද? අනික සල්ලි නැති මිනිස්සු නෙමේනෙ නිරෝධායන මධ්‍යස්ථානවල ඉන්නෙ. විශේෂයෙන්ම කොරෝන නිසා රටේ ආර්ථිකයට දරැණු බලපෑම් විය හැකි අවස්ථාවකදී ඔපමණ ආත්මාර්ථකාමී වෙන්න එපා.

බලන්න ඉහත ඡායාරෑපය දෙස, පැය ගණනාවක් personal protective equipment පැළඳගෙන රෝගීන් වෙනුවෙන් කැප වුනු චීන හෙදියකගේ මුහුණ දෙස. මට මහජනතාවගෙන් ඉල්ලා සිටීමට තියෙන්නෙ වෛද්‍යවරැ ඇතුළු රෝහල් කාර්‍ය මණ්ඩලය අනවශ්‍ය ලෙස වෙහෙසට පත් කරන්න එපා. අධික පීඩනය, නිදි මැරීම, අධිකව වැඩ කිරීමට සිදු වීම නිසා ඔවුන්ගේ ප්‍රතිශක්තිය හීන වී දරැණුවට කොරෝනා වැළඳිය හැකියි. ඇමරිකාවේ වෛද්‍යවරැ දෙදෙනෙක් දරැණුවට කොරෝනා වැළදී අසාධ්‍ය තත්වයේ ඉන්නේ (මේ වන විට ඇමරිකාවේ අසූ ගණනක් කොරෝනා වැළදී මිය ගිහින්). ඉතාලියේත් චීනයේත් වෛද්‍යවරැ  ගණනාවක් මිය ගියා. ඒ නිසා කරැණාකරල වගකීම් සහගතව හැසිරී කොරෝනා ආසාදිතයන් ගණන අවම කර ගැනීමට උත්සහ කරමු, නැතිනම් වෙන්නේ ප්‍රමාණවත් රෝහල් කාර්‍ය මණ්ඩලයක් නොමැතිව මිනිස්සුන්ව මැරෙන්නට හැර බලා සිටීමටයි.  දේශපාලකයන් කවදාවත් හිතුවෙ නෑ මෙහෙම දෙයක් වෙයි කියල, හිතාගෙන හිටියෙ තමන්ට කෙළ වුනාම සිoගප්පූරැ යන්නනෙ, දැන් කොහොමද?

ඊලඟ කාරණය තමයි මේ වෙලාවෙ පැත්තක ඉඳල ලකුණු දාගන්න හදන හොර වෙද්දුන්ව කරේ තියාගෙන ඇත්තටම සෑහෙන්න මහන්සි වෙන රෝහල් කාර්‍ය මණ්ඩල පොඩ්ඩ වැරදුනාම විවේචනය කරන්න එපා. ෆේස් බුක් එකේ බේත් වට්වෝරැ දමන යූ ටියුබ් එකේ පොර ටෝක් දෙන හොර වෙද්දුන්ට අහු වෙලා අමාරැවෙ වැටුනම රෝහල් වලට යන මිනිස්සු අපි. ඔය එක හොර වෙදෙක් අට පාස්ද උන්ගෙ ළමයි ගෑනු අසනීපෙකට උන්ගෙන් බේත් ගන්නවද, මම හොයල බැලුව දෙතුන් දෙනෙක් ගැන. උත්තරය තමයි නැත යන්න. තවත් එකක්, සිoහල බේත් කියල හොර වෙද්දු දෙන බැර ලෝහ වස විස ආදිය දැමූ කසාය ගුළි අරව මේව කොන්දෙ අමාරැවකට බිව්ව මගේ මාම කෙනෙක් අද දරැණු අක්මා රෝගියෙක්. කවදාවත් මත්පැන් නොගත් ඔහුට සිරෝසිස්. ඔය සිoහල බේත් බොන අනිත් අයත් වසරකට වරක් වත් ලේ ටෙස්ට් කරල liver function එක අවුල්ද කියල බලා ගන්න.

ලoකාවේ තත්වය (අඩු තරමින් දැනට) ඇමරිකාවට වඩා ඉදිරියෙන්. ඇමරිකාවේ සෞඛ්‍ය ක්‍ෂේත්‍රය තනිකරම ලාභ ලැබීමේ අරමුණින් ක්‍රියාත්මක වන නිසා ඇමරිකාවේ මිනිසුන්ට ලොකු අවදානමක් ඇති වෙලා. බලන්න පහත විස්තරය දෙස. ඔබ සතුටු වෙන්න ලoකාවේ සෞඛ්‍ය ක්ශේත්‍රය ගැන. ඒවගේම එය රැකගන්න. අපි කලින් සිදු වූ වැරදි හදාගෙන කොරෝනා අභියෝගය ජය ගනිමු.

I called my primary this morning to talk to them about it; she asked me three basic questions, and my answers raised an alarm. Unfortunately, her office is not equipped for testing, as are MOST doctors offices. She strongly suggested I go to the ER to get tested.

We go to the ER, and I am greeted at the door by masked staff. They ask me similar questions; I answer, and they hand me a mask and send me to get checked in. Then we wait.

I’m seen fairly quickly for an ER trip, about half an hour. A nurse takes my blood pressure. A doctor sees me at the nurse’s station, asks me more questions:

Chest pains/labored breathing? Check. Fever? Check. Sore throat? Yup, check again. Have you come in direct contact with somebody that has been diagnosed with COVID-19? Uhhh, how would I know?

“We’ve been in and out of casinos to go to restaurants, and we went to the movies on Sunday. Also, my husband works in a busy bar and comes into contact with tons of people.”

“Well, since you haven’t knowingly come into contact with somebody with the virus, we consider you a low risk and will not test you. But you need to observe self-quarantine protocol.”

Instead, they take a nasal flu swab and encourage me to get a chest x-ray. I decline because, hey, excuse me, I don’t have health insurance. I wish I had declined the flu test, too.

We wait. I get called back to do my paperwork for my visit. I am being charged $1500 for my services. And that’s just the hospital bill; I will be receiving a separate bill from the doctor. The doctor who stood and asked me questions for less than 2 minutes and left.

I almost have no words. The only reason we came here is because the CDC claimed that COVID-19 testing would be free and available to ALL Americans, regardless of insurance status. But here’s the catch: if they refuse to test you, they can and will still charge you.

And you will leave with no answers.

Here’s what’s wrong: it’s possible that I have it, and it’s possible that I don’t. But I won’t ever know. How can we stop the spread of this virus if this is the quality of care that we’re being offered?

It is, quite literally, fucked.

But I will, of course, abide. I will be holed up at home, trying to get better, knowing no more than I did this morning.

**UPDATE** 03/16/20

I have been diagnosed with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) by an ER doctor. The symptoms mimic that of COVID-19: fever, sore throat, shortness of breath, chest pain/pain in lungs when breathing, etc. It is common in babies and small children (weird!), and, in adults, is essentially cured with self-care, NSAIDs, and rest. I should feel better within the next week, week and a half.

After pressing the doc, I have been assured that COVID-19 is unlikely to exist alongside another viral infection. Assured, and urged to stay home and rest and get well.
